ABOUT THE ARTIST

As my parents can attest to, I've been playing with clay since childhood. After spending many years as a part-time ceramic artist, I left the "paycheck world" at the end of 2002 and have devoted myself full time to clay ever since.

I make functional pottery, using both the potter's wheel and handbuilding techniques. I strive for grace and elegance, while maintaining a strong focus on function. I want people to use my pieces in their daily lives - a mug they reach for in the morning, the fruit bowl gracing the kitchen table or a soap dish sitting on their bathroom counter. I hope that in some small way my work makes one smile, and appreciate the beauty and simplicity of handmade work.

I use stoneware and porcelain clays. Most of my recent work is soda fired. I spray a soda ash solution into the kiln at 2,350 degrees Fahrenheit. The soda ash flows through the kiln on the flames, catching the edges and rims of my pots, and reacting with the clay in a way that highlights forms and creates its own pattern of flame on my pieces.  A few recent pieces were fired in a kiln fueled by wood.

All work is food, dishwasher and microwave safe.

Recently, I have been focused on texture and pattern, using both clay surface manipulation and glaze application. Some of the patterns are inspired by sand patterns on the beach and in riverbeds, while others by simple geometry. Some are also inspired by my mother's work in textiles.

I first came to the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado in September, 2003, to take a workshop at Anderson Ranch Art Center, where I was later an Artist in Residence. I loved the mountains and open spaces so much that this area is now my home. I'm an adjunct ceramics instructor at Colorado Mountain College - Aspen and teach children's classes during the summer at the Carbondale Clay Center. From 2004-07, I spent summers as the Head Ceramics Studio Manager and taught classes at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, in Cape Cod, MA.

Although I have no university art degree, I've taken workshops and classes at Haystack Mountain School for Crafts in Deer Isle, ME ( www.haystack.org ), Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village, CO ( www.andersonranch.org ) and the Carbondale Clay Center ( www.carbondaleclay.org ). I was an Artist-in-Residence at Anderson Ranch. During the summers, I was the Ceramics Studio Manager at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill ( www.castlehill.org ) in Truro, MA. In 2009 season I have my work in Gallery Ehva in Provincetown.

Please enjoy perusing my website, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions!
